How to become or start your career in photography is a question I’ve been getting asked a lot.
How do I start my career? What do I do to become a photographer and so here are the answer to some of those burning questions?
The first thing that usually comes to mind when I think about starting anything is really narrowing your perspective because in any industry whether it’s photography, film, or whatever career maybe. The people’s vision or perspective is very broad and by narrowing down them you can really focus on the things that you want to accomplish and in photography. In the beginning, challenge yourself to think about photography as a tool for really highlighting your interest. For example, you want to be a specialist in architecture so photograph lots of buildings around the world and travel and in doing that you will become better at architectural photography but because you had that narrow focus you will develop other skill sets slowly and incrementally. Rather than getting this broad perspective and not really being good at one thing so my advice to you is really focused and narrow down your perspective choose what type of photography you really enjoy and work with that and you will slowly start getting closer and to developing those skillsets for accomplishing what you need to do in that specific type of work.
Then slowly add in other details like for example architecture photography was what I started and I went into portrait and then I slowly went into product photography and commercial in a seven-year timeline so be patient with yourself.
Find A Goal To Achieve
The next point of starting a career in photography is to find someone that you want to work with or someone that you want to work for and in doing that you will learn so much more as a photographer so as an example when I started my photography career I message so many different photographers asking if I could just you know learn from them or hang out with them for a day or two and I met a lot of really talented photographers in India. That allowed me the opportunity to come into their world and question them and get the best answers to the questions.
I’ve always wanted to ask questions like how is it to start a career in photography, what are the stats that need or how do I build my website or what kind of clients should I work with, things that you need to discuss with someone in order to learn from it. I think the best part of having people around you is that you can give and take and kind of develop your skills with someone else. Draw a perspective so be an assistant or assist as much as you can another photographer in your area or someone that you admire. So that’s a good way to really develop those skills and start your period in photography.
Be ready before starting your professional career
You have to get your website and all your social channels ready if you want to enter photography and make it a career. The reason for that is because we’re at a different age now in terms of photography and the industry has changed drastically. A lot of photographers are found online through their social platforms while others are found through their websites and through contacts through their friends and networks but if you don’t have those fundamental sites or social accounts available it’s really hard for our brands to discover you. It’s really hard for people to show your work to others so first and foremost get that website up and running collect your best work, put it up there as much information that you can on your website so people don’t have to think too much when they’re scrolling through looking through your pages. Make sure you have an about page so people understand who you are where you come from and why you pursuing photography. Make sure that you have a client page of prime work that you’ve done even if that’s shooting your friends or a target shooting a wedding or whatever it may be. That’s up getting you to start your career and on social media similarly make your contact available you want to have your email on the social account you want to have the ability to communicate with people.
Create your own style
So one of the best ways to empower yourself as a brand or a photographer is by creating your own style visual style that is and over the years I’ve really worked hard in creating a certain aesthetic or editing technique that people could resonate with while also noticing that it comes from my work and in doing so you start to create an environment where people recognize your work and that’s the most important aspect of becoming a photographer is creating work that really stands alone and that is recognizable so in order to create your own style.
How you can get more people to see your work?
One way of doing that is entering competitions. There are photography competitions that are always out there. You’re just going to search for photography competitions and just keep an eye out for them they’re very important because they allow you to be a little bit more vulnerable with your work. You get someone to be able to critique your work and also you get to be able to put together a story when you submit your photos which helps you better describe your work.
Another method is just simply being more transparent and be who you are as a photographer. This is the idea of being recognizable so as a photographer what you should do is to make sure that people should know what you look like, attempt to attend events and you know galleries and exhibits and that really shows you as being a part of the community and another is just being on social media really putting your stuff out there and letting people see it.
